CAFÉ LUÍS BENAVIDES™ – SMOOTH, DELIGHTFUL COFFEES OF NARIÑO

LUÍS BENAVIDES™ COFFEE offers some of the smoothest and most delightful Colombian Nariño Gourmet and Regional Blends available. As a traditional grower since 1897 in the Department of Nariño, located in the mountainous Andes Region of Southwestern Colombia, the Benavides family-owned company is committed to preserving the time-tested small grower, manual methods of producing, harvesting, and processing coffee because these methods result in the very best quality from sustainable small plantations. We are a specialty coffee company registered with the Colombian National Federation of Coffee Growers and have consistently been environmentally conscious at all stages of production and processing. We pay fair and equitable compensation to our workers and suppliers and adhere to fair trade standards. To ensure that the premium prices we pay reach the individual small producers they are meant to benefit, we require that the regional cooperatives and other buyers that supply us be able to trace payments to their producers and members.

A BIT OF HISTORY
Through the first 38 years after establishing the Consacá plantation in 1897, the Benavides Family became an important local grower before taking the next steps in coffee processing and marketing. In 1935, the family opened a coffee grading facility in the nearby departmental capital of Pasto and ten years later expanded to a full grading and roasting operation to produce and market “Cocalí” brand coffee.  By 1970, Nariño coffee gained international recognition and the most demanding buyers from Germany and California, in the United States, started to order coffee from the region. Demand for this smooth and delicate coffee has grown since then and it is now recognized by discerning buyers and consumers as one of the world’s distinctly unique premium coffees of certified origin.

During the 20th century, the Benavides’s were an important force in local economic development in the Municipality of Consacá. Its investments in small hydroelectric plants, extension of local power lines, road and bridge construction played an important role in the town’s development.

Global.com was created in 2007 to continue the family business and to modernize its coffee roasting, packaging, branding and marketing operations, both domestically and internationally. The LUÍS BENAVIDES™ COFFEE brand was registered soon thereafter as the company trade mark in Colombia and is marketed in the U.S. under the same name.  In addition to the family’s traditional grower, intermediate processing and marketing functions, Global.com now grades, roasts and packages both its Gourmet and Regional Blend products under contract with an ISO 9001:2000 certified facility in Pasto, the capital city of the Department of Nariño. Producing a shelf-ready product locally from growing the coffee to final packaging is consistent with our long-standing commitment to local and regional economic development. The bottom line is we offer delicate coffees, readily recognized by their smoothness, pronounced aroma, and fragrance, pleasing when taken either black, with cream, or prepared as espressos or cappuccinos.

OUR PRODUCTS
LUÍS BENAVIDES™GOURMET COFFEEis a very special smooth coffee produced on the original 1897 plantation and on several neighboring farms in the Municipality of Consacá, Department of Nariño in the mountainous Andes Region of Southwestern Colombia. The geographical and soil attributes on these farms are very similar to each other and traditional harvesting, intermediate washing and drying methods in this concentrated locality are carefully monitored rendering a consistently excellent quality raw material for our Gourmet Coffee.

LUÍS BENAVIDES™REGIONAL COFFEE is a blend of coffee grown in various municipalities throughout the Department of Nariño and is certified by the Colombian National Coffee Federation as having its origin in Nariño.

WHAT MAKES COFFEE FROM NARIÑO SPECIAL?
Several important growing conditions make coffee produced in Nariño truly outstanding - the volcanic ash from nearby volcanoes provides important micro-elements to soil composition, proximity to the equator gives consistent hours of daylight year-round, and optimal growing altitudes that extend from about 4,500 feet up to 6,500 feet above sea level, provide excellent conditions for coffee cultivation. Clean mountain water, shade grown, disease resistant plant varieties, combined with hand picking, sun-drying, and hand selection of only the best quality beans, place our raw materials among the highest quality available.

QUALITY ASSURANCE
As the purchasing, marketing and distribution arm of LUÍS BENAVIDES™ brand coffees, Global.com assures the certification of origin and exacting quality standards in the selection of our coffee beans through our registration with the Colombian National Coffee Federation and affiliation with principal regional coffee cooperatives. Our bags are made from high barrier materials and have the requisite de-gasification valves for extended freshness of up to one year shelf life. When we add excellence in roasting and the packaging process provided by our contracted ISO 9001:2000 certified regional facility, LUÍS BENAVIDES™COFFEE offers a shelf ready final product second to none. Importantly, the facility is owned and operated by highly experienced coffee specialists in all aspects of the trade, including the critical art of coffee roasting, assuring us and the consumer the consistent, excellent quality of our final product.

HOW TO PREPARE A REALLY FINE CUP OF BREWED COFFEE

  • Use 2 tablespoons of ground coffee per each  8 oz. cup to be prepared (add more or less to taste for stronger or weaker coffee)

Useful tips:

  • Grind LUIS BENAVIDES™ WHOLE BEAN COFFEE for about 10 to 12 seconds: a longer grinding time rends a finer powder resulting in a stronger cup.
  • If using a French press, heat water to a simmer for best results. Mix water and ground coffee and let the infusion steep for about four minutes
